Dear client, in bipolar disorders treatment protocols depend on number of depressive and manic episodes . Current consensus on treatment of bipolar disorder is as follows : one episode - treatment upto 2 years. 2 to 4 episodes - treatment upto 5 years. More than 4 episodes usually require lifelong treatment . Again , I must say in psychiatry we also use individualised treatment approach which depends on patient's personality profile , lifestyle and stressors. My personal opinion is that it is always better to remain on medication rather than getting a fresh episode and not on medication . Because a fresh episode cause much more harm to ur mental and physical wellbeing as compare to drugs, so in that case risk and benefit ratio need to be calculated in a very careful manner.i hope u will get benefited with my brief answer.

Do see a psychologist who can assess your disorder. If you are able to manage your life well then the doctor may reduce your medication and it's possible that you may stop the medication also. But this needs to be done under competent supervision. Regular counselling will help you tremendously.
