My doctor has asked me to have breakfast at 8am. Take 75gms glucose in water at 9am. And then give blood sample at 11am. Is this the correct procedure?
My lab says that fasting is required where as doctor asked me to have breakfast. Please clarify.

There are 2 types of tests.
In india mostly- 75 gm glucose irrespective of fasting status - post 1 hr and post 2 hr blood sugars test.
international guidelines-
Fasting of about 8 to12 hr - fasting sample for blood sugars
Then 75 gm glucose
Post 1 hr and post 2 hr.

There are two types of tests for checking for diabetes in pregnancy:
1. 75 g glucose in water and blood test after 2 hours without any fasting requirement (this is a screening test as per DIPSI guidelines suggested by many doctors and this is also valid)
2. 75 g OGTT where the fasting blood sugar test is done in the morning (after 8-12 hours of fasting) and then after 1 hr and 2 hr of 75 g glucose water intake, blood sugar is tested again.
Either of them is ok. Some doctors prefer to do the first one (screening test) and if that is positive they will suggest to do the next test which is a confirmatory test.
This is not the standard fasting OGTT. For a 75 g OGTT, you should be fasting for 8–10 hours, take glucose, and blood is tested as advised.
Follow your doctor’s instructions, but if the test prescribed is OGTT, clarify again—breakfast is usually not allowed before the test.
