Why do we do serology test during pregnancy

I am a 27 year old lady, 12 weeks pregnant. I have been asked to do a few blood tests now over the course of pregnancy. One of them is serology test. Why do we have to do serology test during pregnancy? What will the results show? Are there any complications post test?
