For white coat hypertension, if the anxiety can’t be managed by non-medication strategies like deep breathing, mindfulness, and cognitive reframing and appear insufficient in controlling the anxiety then, short-term anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines can be considered, or beta blocker may be used to control physical symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety itself can increase the blood pressure and thus may give a false raised reading. And an increase BP reading can worsen the anxiety, causing a vicious loop. If your consultant psychiatrist has prescribed an SOS bases treatment and suggested relaxation techniques- it’s an appropriate line of management and you should follow it, no harm in suggested treatment.
Next Steps
Consult your psychiatrist if this preliminary line of management isn’t helping you. Good luck.
Health Tips
Regular home blood pressure monitoring in a calm environment- exposure and avoid excessive stress and anxiety- response prevention can be tried.

You probably seem to have apprehensive anxiety whenever you are measuring your bp readings. If anxiety doesn’t involve other areas of your life and your everyday routine, you should start with relaxation exercise or deep breathing before checking your bp in different settings like home, office and clinic. If the readings are persistently high, try an anxiolytic to see whether it’s truly your anxiety that is making your bp increase. If not, evaluate for causes of hypertension especially because you are young. Don’t ignore these signs. Early diagnosis can help you in many ways. Feel free to contact for further queries.
