Whenever PT helps TMJD?
I have jaw pain for 2 months. Dentist said it's like tmjd. Whether PT helps? I want to know if PT really helps or I should go for tmj specialist and get the mouth appliance or splint. How long does it take to recover if I do PT session?

Physiotherapy can be used to treat TMD by reducing pain and inflammation in the joint and improving the movement and function of your TMJ. ■ Exercise your jaw regularly on your physiotherapist’s advice. ■ Be aware when you are clenching or grinding your teeth. ■ Change to a soft food diet and avoid hard and chewy foods. ■ Cut tough food into small pieces.
Next Steps
Consult a physiotherapist
Health Tips
■ Excessive chewing (e.g. Nails, gum, pen tops & your cheek). This stops the jaw from having a rest. ■ Excessive mouth opening (e.g. Yawning). ■ Resting your jaw in your hand or holding your telephone to your ear using just your shoulders. ■ Sleeping face down, as this puts a strain on the neck.

Try to do mouth exercises like opening and keeping it wide open. Do side jaw movements and front and back. These movements will be painful but tolerate the same. The pain can be due to stiffness of muscles and ligaments at the TMJ. This approach has been found useful to me. All the best.

Next Steps
-Neck exercises...with postural education -jaw mobilisation (self and therapist assisted) -pterigoids, temporalis and other muscle releases
