I am a 43 year old female, housewife. I am having sleep issues since the last 3 months. Someone said it's called insomnia. What is the treatment for insomnia in adults? What medications do I need to take for this? Now once started, will this problem stay life long? Can it affect my health otherwise?

Hello,
If there is problem related to only sleep then you can try sleep hygiene. This include- Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends. Use bed only for sleeping do not read book or use phone on bed. Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature. Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smart phones, from the bedroom. Avoid large meals, caffeine, smoking and alcohol before bedtime. Go for walk or exercise. If the problem persists consult for treatment of underlying cause for insomnia. Medication are last resort and they are prescribed for a small period of time if required.
Hello practo user
I can understand your concerns regarding your health . Sleeping disturbances can be caused due to some underlying factor which is stressful in nature . You can try and practice these relaxing techniques for a better sleep hygiene-- limit your phone/ laptop/ tv usage at night , try and practice deep breathing or guided meditation , eat light healthy and balanced food and also avoid heavy greasy food items at night , have warm milk or relaxing tea , take a warm shower to feel more relaxed . You can also try and talk to your close and trusted family members or friends. It is advisable that you seek help from a clinical psychologist for an in-depth case history and formulation of a treatment plan through regular psychotherapy sessions . You can also reach out to me through the practo app for any further help or guidance.

From your description it seems more anxiety than insomnia. Unable to sleep is also a symtom of other disturbance in our body. Start with full body profile. B12 and vitamin D specially. Consult the physician. And than consult a psychiatrist. In the mean time try taking hot milk with little sugar and haldi before 30 min to bed. Sometimes old remedies provide us a bit of security we are looking for. For your long term health consult someone and wait for diagnosis. Sometimes hasty diagnosis can lead to dependence on medicines. All the best !!
