Hi. X-rays certainly shows fracture in her arm bone upper end. In young persons this fracture is commonly treated with surgical reduction and stabilisation but in older individuals with poor general conditions, poor bone quality, medical co existing conditions the choice of management is more conservative than Surgical. She can be given a shoulder sling for few days till pain is high. Then she should be put on Physio to mobilise the joint and gradually increase to regain the strength of muscles. Final results are almost similar to that surgical intervention.
In a UK study, this type of fractures treated with or without surgery for same results. There is risk of stiffness for overhead activities even after surgery. She needs weekly X-rays for two weeks. She needs regular rehabilitation and physio now. Opinion given by Dr Sivaraman B, Shoulder Consultant, OMR, Chennai
