I am 4 months into my internship now and a lot of things stress me out. I can't get over the death of my patients and can't help but think where I was responsible. I judge myself, I am not confident in my abilities. I find myself comparing myself with my friends and batchmates who have probably been better at this job than me. I missed the chance to assist an operation in my gynae postings and my surgery postings. Will this make a huge difference in my career? I aspire to be a good neurosurgeon. As all of you are doctors here, I will really get helped with some honest feedback. Thank you.

Hi
Internship is a learning process and also an exposure to the events that as a professional one would encounter down the line. As an intern its a natural tendency of comparison since throughout our learning years there have been comparison with results to our performance.
I too as an intern got baffled out in my professional career when there was a dropout of the client. Though it isn't as severe as a death of the client but you as an budding surgeon must know consciously that such shortcomings are a complementary. Which even your seniors and professors would have explained it.
It's great that you have taken professional support .

I appreciate your willingness to seek a professional support..
Comparing yourselves with others is the culprit thought because of which, all those unwanted thoughts about your own capabilities is affecting you..
Maybe, the operations which you missed could be of huge mental strength, still, you have all the opportunities to fine tune yourself and instill all those skills which are basically needed to become a surgeon..

Hi, I am a psychotherapist and counselor. My advice is to you that never compare yourself with others. It shakes the conference. As the negative thoughts comes in your mind you lose your confidence.

Hi... I am a Psychologist and I can say you that we all feel some level of stress and self judgement every time we are encountering a novel and serious case (risk to life). Sometimes it may also have a medicolegal consequence, apart from bearing the moral weight.
This stress is good because it keeps us on our toes and help us do our best. Though with time and experience it will gradually decrease. But it is important to keep asking ourselves, if we are doing our best or not.
Patients and their families tend to treat us as God's or Evil/Thugs depending upon the outcome of the case. But we need to maintain our Neutrality and Professionalism at all times and every time.
You have joined a nobel profession and you will do well. Death is always hard to bear but what matters is if we did what we could while there was time or not.
We don't get to decide who lives and who dies. We just have our skills and training at our disposal. We need to keep working hard to be update with new scientific developments in our fields and we need to keep doing good work.
And that is all that matters.
