Umbilical granuloma
After the umbilical cord fell off, my baby has this in the navel. Can you please suggest what it is and what treatment I should undertake?

Common salt application for 10–20 minutes once or twice daily for a few days can help shrink it. Keep the area dry. Fold diaper below the umbilicus. However, before advising home treatment, it is important to rule out: Umbilical polyp Patent urachus Omphalomesenteric duct remnant Early omphalitis Red flags needing pediatric review: Fever Surrounding redness/warmth Foul smell or pus Persistent watery discharge Bleeding Swelling of surrounding skin Failure to improve after a few days Definitive treatment in clinic is often: Silver nitrate cauterization Occasionally ligation/excision if persistent or atypical Early consultations can prevent complications. Apply common salt at home twice daily for 15-20 minutes then clean it with cotton cloth. Urgent review if: • Pus/foul smell • Fever • Redness spreading around umbilicus • Bleeding • Persistent watery discharge.

Umbilical Granuloma can happen after the dry umbilical cord stump falls off. If there is no redness in the surrounding skin, no pus discharge from the naval no fever or signs of infection simple table salt application daily after bath for 5-10 minutes with cleaning by cotton later will heal it in a few days time. Keep the naval dry always. Keep the diaper below the naval to prevent urine wetting the naval.
Next Steps
If you find signs of infection get a check up.
