Schizophrenic dad unwilling to seek help
My father has had Schizophrenia for years now. My mum used to treat it with homeopathic meds which didn't work. How do I get him to seek professional help now when he's very much unwilling to go to a doc.

Your father's case needs to be treated by an expert psychologist who is a good homeopathic physician. A general homeopathic physician may not justify your case.

Hello dear, dealing schizophrenia is a really challenging task. And that is very common that person who has psychotic disorder like schizophrenia often lack of insight like they don’t realise that they have problem. At this situation it os very difficult and frustrating to make them understand. The best you can do is go to see a psychiatrist alone and explain the whole situation and get medicine for your father. When he will get his insight you can talk to him and take him to psychologist for counselling.

Hi, Navigating the situation with a parent who has schizophrenia and is unwilling to seek professional help can be incredibly challenging. It's important to approach the topic with empathy and patience. Start by having an open and non-confrontational conversation with your father about his well-being. Express your concerns for him gently, emphasizing that you care about his health and want to support him. Sharing specific observations about his behavior or experiences can help him understand your viewpoint without sounding accusatory. You might also validate his feelings, acknowledging that change can be daunting and that acknowledging the need for help is a big step. It may be helpful to gently introduce the idea of talking to a healthcare professional as a way to improve his quality of life rather than framing it solely as a need for treatment. If he remains resistant, consider seeking support from other family members or trusted friends who may have a stronger influence on him. In the meantime, educate yourself about schizophrenia and treatment options, so you can provide accurate information and address any misconceptions he might have. If necessary, you could also explore options for involuntary treatment, depending on the severity of his condition and the laws in your area, but this should generally be seen as a last resort. Remember to take care of your own mental health as well, as caring for someone with a mental illness can be demanding and stressful. Ultimately, fostering a supportive and understanding environment may encourage him to consider seeking the professional help he needs.

Instead of framing it as a ‘doctor’s visit,’ suggest a general health checkup or online consultation first. If he listens to a particular friend, family member, or religious leader, involve them in the conversation.
Next Steps
Some psychiatrists provide home consultations, which may feel less intimidating.

Helping a loved one with schizophrenia, seek professional help when they are unwilling can be challenging, but there are strategies you can try. Steps to Encourage Professional Help 1. Build Trust & Be Patient Avoid arguing or forcing them to see a doctor, as it may make them more resistant. Approach conversations with empathy and patience. 2. Educate Yourself & Family Learn about schizophrenia and its symptoms to better understand what they are going through. Involve other family members who can gently encourage treatment. 3. Use Non-Threatening Language Instead of saying "You need help," try "I’m worried about you, and I think talking to someone might help." Use "we" statements: "We can go together and see what the doctor suggests." 4. Identify a Trusted Person If they refuse to listen to you, maybe they trust another relative or friend who can convince them. 5. Seek a Home Consultation Some psychiatrists offer home visits for patients who refuse to go to the clinic. 6. Introduce the Idea Gradually Start with general counseling or a therapist instead of a psychiatrist. Slowly introduce the concept of medication if needed. 7. Handle Delusions & Hallucinations Calmly Don't argue with their beliefs. Instead, acknowledge their feelings and redirect the conversation. 8. Use a Medical Emergency if Needed If they become a danger to themselves or others, you might need to contact emergency psychiatric services.
Next Steps
Helpful Tips Routine & Stability: Ensure they have a calm and structured daily life. Healthy Lifestyle: Encourage good sleep, diet, and exercise. Support Groups: Look for schizophrenia support groups (both for the patient and caregivers). Medication Management: If they are already on meds but are reluctant to continue, discuss alternative forms like long-acting injections with a psychiatrist.

Hi...Please reach out to a Psychiatrist. There is a specific protocol to administrator medications in such cases. The Psychiatrist will guide you well. I know some good Psychiatrist in Bangalore and I can share contact. The protocol cannot be shared on an open platform to avoid misuse. You can seek Counselling for yourself and Family by a Psychologist, as it is required in such cases. Remember, you and your Family is not the only ones suffering from this situation. Schizophrenia is a disorder which becomes manageable with medications and proper guidance. Things will get better.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychiatrist. Follow protocol to administer Medications under medical supervision. Consult a Psychologist. Invidual and Family Therapy/ Counselling is required.

Getting a schizophrenic patient to a psychiatrist is quite often a difficult task. Yet, considering that the disease has effective medicines in modern medicines (the evolved version of allopathy), getting your dad to the doctor and ensuring that he takes the medicine(s) regularly are very crucial for his well-being along with that of your mom as his caregiver. Please visit an experienced psychiatrist yourself without your dad and seek ways to handle his treatment and medication. Most psychiatrists these days do try their best to deal with the rejection of treatment by the patients. Going to the doctor with the patient's willing cooperation is unlikely and waiting for such a day will not be wise.
