Throat cancer is not as frequent as we think in the age group that your patient is in. Smoking however can lead to it in later life so it is best that he quit.. Regarding the sore throat and knot in the neck region, if it is a short duration pain then more likely to be infection. Which can be confirmed and treatment can be taken with your nearby ent specialist.

There are various causes for throat pain such as acute pharyngo-tonsillitis, reflux laryngopharyngitis, ulcers in the throat etc. Direct examination of throat and endoscopic examination will rule out any suspicion of cancer
Next Steps
Consult nearby ENT specialist for confirmation of diagnosis and appropriate treatment if required
