(A)If you are someone who deals with rabies virus or works with animals like vets etc then you will need a pre exposure or preventive vaccine which is 3 doses -0,7,21/28 . That is 0 meaning first dose followed by second dose after 7 days from first dose and third dose followed by 21/28 days since first dose. (B)If you are exposed to rabies first time then you need 4 doses of vaccine - 0,3,7,14 . First dose followed by second ,three days from first dose then the third at 7th day and fourth on the 14th day since first dose. Along with the first dose One dose of Rabies immune globulin is also given. (C) If you have been exposed for a second time and are previously vaccinated as explained in (B) then you need only two doses . One on the same day as the bite and one three days from the first dose. The first dose of rabies vaccine is supposed to be taken within three days since exposure. Always wash the wound thoroughly with clean water and soap and immediately head for the vaccine. If possible Keep track of the dog that bit you. Any behavioural changes, worsening of health or death of that dog report to your Doctor immediately.
Next Steps
You will need two booster doses, for the recent bite.
