Yes. Under the RPwD Act, 2016, mental and neurodevelopmental conditions like intellectual disability, dyspraxia (SLD), autism spectrum disorder, mental illness, and neurological disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s) are eligible for PWD quota if certified with ≥40% disability by a government medical board (District Hospital, AIIMS, etc.). You can apply for a UDID card via swavlambancard.gov.in. This certificate is valid for all government exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs. Refer to Gazette Notification S.O. 76(E), 04 Jan 2018 and disabilityaffairs.gov.in for details.

Yes, certain neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions can qualify under the PWD quota as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. These include intellectual disability, specific learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, and mental illness, among others. Conditions like dyspraxia or neurodevelopmental coordination disorder may be considered if they significantly impact daily functioning and are certified by an authorised government medical board (usually in a district hospital or medical college). To apply, you’ll need an official disability certificate (UDID card) from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or designated authority. Most UPSC, SSC, and state government exams recognise this certification for reservation benefits. For detailed guidance, you can check the official government portal swavlamban or visit your district hospital’s disability certification cell for better guidance and take care

Hi, In India, certain mental health and neurological conditions, including intellectual disabilities (low IQ), developmental coordination disorders like dyspraxia, and other neurodevelopmental disorders, are recognized under the PWD (Persons with Disabilities) category for reservation in government jobs. These conditions are eligible if they significantly impair daily functioning, as certified by authorized medical authorities. To avail of this reservation, candidates must obtain a disability certificate from a designated Medical Board or authorized government hospital, which assesses the severity and nature of the condition. The certification process involves medical examinations and documentation of the disability. The specific eligibility criteria and recognized conditions are detailed in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the subsequent guidelines issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. For official procedures, eligibility, and recognized exams, you can refer to the official websites of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities or the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Consulting a qualified medical professional or disability certification authority can also provide personalized guidance.

Yes, certain mental health and neurological conditions are considered eligible for reservation under the PWD (Persons with Disabilities) quota in Indian government jobs, as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act 2016. 1. Intellectual disability (including low IQ, formerly called mental retardation) is explicitly recognized as an eligible disability category. 2. Autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, and mental illness (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) also qualify. 3. Neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and chronic neurological disorders resulting in at least 40% disability are covered. Developmental coordination disorders (like dyspraxia) may be included if they result in significant and permanent impairment.
Next Steps
Certification Process: Disability certification must be obtained from a government-authorized medical board (typically consisting of specialists in the field). The evaluation uses standardized functional and impairment-based disability assessment guidelines notified by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of India. For certain conditions where severity fluctuates, certification is typically based on the present degree of functional limitation, and must show a minimum of 40% disability to qualify.
Health Tips
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities provides FAQs and official guidelines about disability types and reservation processes. For detailed lists, check the Schedule of Disabilities under the RPwD Act and refer to government job notifications for recognized qualifying disabilities.
