Hello, It is quite common for autistic children to show increased anxiety, repetitive behaviours, and emotional dysregulation around the onset of puberty. Hormonal changes, body changes, and sensory discomfort can temporarily intensify autistic behaviours, even in children who were previously stable. An increase in Risperidone from 1 mg to 1.5 mg per day based on age, height, weight, and symptom change is a reasonable and commonly used adjustment in such situations. In most children, you may start noticing some calming effect within 5-7 days, with clearer behavioural improvement over 2-3 weeks. Full stabilisation can take up to 4 weeks. In addition, during this age and phase, it is important to observe for symptoms of co-occurring ADHD, such as increased restlessness, impulsivity, reduced attention span, emotional outbursts, or difficulty settling- these can sometimes become more noticeable during puberty and may contribute to the recent behavioural changes.
Next Steps
• Continue the prescribed dose regularly and consistently • Observe changes in: 1. Anxiety levels 2. Repetitive sounds/behaviours 3. Sleep and irritability • Maintain a predictable routine and provide reassurance about body changes • Keep a follow-up appointment with the psychiatrist in 2-4 weeks to review response and side effects
Health Tips
Watch for side effects such as excessive sleepiness, increased appetite, weight gain, stiffness, or breast-related changes and report them to the doctor if noted. Do not reduce or stop the medicine on your own. Puberty-related behavioural changes are often temporary, and with proper support, children usually settle well. Hi..Yes. it is fairly common for autistic behaviors to become more noticeable or intensify in  puberty. Puberty is a time of big hormonal, social, emotional, and physical change — and for children on the autism spectrum, these shifts can directly affect how autistic traits present and how intensely they’re expressed. Usually medicines take around 2 weeks to show their effect
