I want to know if psychiatric medicines like SSRI, SNRI, antipsychotics etc cause any damage to neurons or brain cells or damage receptors. Do these permanently destroy neurons or induce neuron death or how? Also, want to ask about rtms therapy. Does this destroy neurons or it helps. Internet information is not reliable as everyone says anything that may not be medically accurate. Kindly share right information. Thanks

Psychiatric medications like SSRIs, SNRIs, and antipsychotics are generally not neurotoxic. These drugs are extensively studied and are prescribed to help restore balance in neurotransmitter systems, not destroy neurons. There is no evidence that these medications permanently damage brain cells or receptors when taken as prescribed under medical supervision. In fact, untreated psychiatric conditions may themselves contribute to neuronal atrophy or dysfunction over time due to chronic stress or inflammation.
Next Steps
Always consult your psychiatrist before making medication changes.
Hello. This can be discussed via an online or offline session. We perform RTMS at our hospital as well. You can book an appointment with me via Mind and Brain Hospital online or offline.
Hi...Psychiatric medicines do not damage neurons; in fact, many help protect the brain by stabilizing brain chemistry. For example, antidepressants and mood stabilizers can promote the growth and connection of brain cells. Some antipsychotics may have side effects, but they are carefully prescribed to balance benefits and risks. When taken under a psychiatrist's supervision, these medicines help manage mental illnesses and improve brain function. It’s important not to stop or fear treatment based on myths—always discuss.
