Problem regarding anxiety
Hi I'm 22 years old male. I have been dealing with anxiety since 2023 and I've been on medication for it. I've been smoking for few months but now I've stopped it. I'm feeling restless. Is this because I've stopped smoking suddenly or is it something else?

Stopping smoking can cause a bit of withdrawal anxiety which any psychiatrist would be able to treat. Good luck.

Hello Your restlessness is likely a combination of nicotine withdrawal and your existing anxiety disorder. Since you’ve been smoking for a few months and suddenly stopped, your body is adjusting to the absence of nicotine, which can cause irritability, restlessness, mood swings, and increased anxiety. At the same time, if you’ve been relying on smoking as a coping mechanism for anxiety, quitting might temporarily make your symptoms feel worse. This phase is temporary, and your body will adjust over time. To ease the restlessness, try deep breathing exercises, physical activity, staying hydrated, and distraction techniques like listening to music or engaging in hobbies. If your anxiety feels overwhelming, therapy can help you develop healthier coping strategies to manage both withdrawal symptoms and long-term anxiety. Should consult your Psychiatrist as soon as possible. Anxiety can get worse if you abruptly stop smoking. Proper psychiatric assessment should be done.
Next Steps
consultation immediately for the smoking cessation.

Hi there, You have written about your issues but it is not clear whether you are still on anxiolytics or not. Yes ,Cigarettes contain nicotine and if people continue for long can also go into withdrawal symptoms like anxiety also. There’s need to know details in the history and MSE.
Next Steps
I also advise people to go through investigations like Thyroid profile and some other tests to rule out medical issues which can present as Anxiety features.
Health Tips
Don’t worry. Contract a mental health professional for your issues.Im sure those will be sorted out soon.
