Pregnancy
I'm 14 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with diabetes before pregnancy. I was taking metformin 1000 mg for first trimester and my hba1c is 5.7. Now the doctor has asked me to stop metformin and switch to insulin since it's safer for the baby. Can I switch back to metformin after delivery of baby?

Yes, you can usually switch back to Metformin after delivery, but this decision depends on your blood sugar levels postpartum and your overall health. --- Here's what you should know: During Pregnancy: Your doctor is absolutely right: Insulin is the safest and most effective option for controlling diabetes during pregnancy. Even though your HbA1c is 5.7% (very good), pregnancy causes hormonal changes that increase insulin resistance, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, so insulin is preferred. --- After Delivery: Once your baby is born and you’re no longer breastfeeding or cleared by your doctor, you can often resume Metformin — especially if you had good control on it earlier. Your doctor will likely check your postpartum HbA1c and fasting/PP sugars around 6–12 weeks after delivery to decide the next step. --- What You Should Do: 1. Follow your doctor’s advice strictly during pregnancy to protect both you and the baby. 2. Stay active, eat a balanced diabetic-friendly pregnancy diet, and monitor sugar regularly. 3. After delivery, ask your doctor about restarting Metformin, especially if your sugars are stable.

Hi, Hope you are doing well. You should definitely consider what your treating doctor is suggesting. After delivery, we will need to look at your sugars again. It will come down post delivery and if it's well in control you can go back to metformin If your sugars are high around the time of delivery, you might be on insulin for a short period and then switched to metformin . Insulin is a good, safe and wonderful medicine. So is metformin. Don't worry All the best for your pregnancy
