Prednisolone and Blood Sugar
7 days back ENT surgeon has given me Wysolone 10 mg tablet for two weeks , twice daily for Nasal Polyp and chronic sinusitis. Prior to prescribing it my Random blood sugar was checked and is 119 mg/dL and told me to check the sugar after one week from starting Wysolone. Today after  one week, the Random blood sugar is 149 mg/dL and is having bloating and severe tiredness. Is this an indication the sugar level is rising. I am not diabetic. Blood pressure is 140/90. Requesting valuable advice.

When on steroids the blood sugar will rise. But it comes back to normal as soon as you stop steroids. For pregnant ladies we cover them with insulin under such situations because we don't want to have any blood sugar fluctuations. But in your case it is not such a situation. After one week the steroids will stop and within a week thereafter your blood sugar will be normal.

Corticosteroid effect on blood glucose levels will depend on the time and dose.Blood glucose levels may rise soon after the intake and may remain high for 3-10 days afterwards. Do not worry .it will come down just monitor blood sugar and BP .repeat sugar after 15 days.

No. But will require retesting after some time as it can cause permanent diabetes. Also need treatment for hypertension.
