Relationships create deep attachments. They become complex because they fulfill some of our innate needs and hence they are difficult to detach with. You will have to figure out the needs that your exfriend fulfill. You need to resolve these attachments. Find how you can compensate for those needs. Can you tolerate the detachment? Can you redirect those needs and convert them what is manageable and functional for your current relationship?
