Vitamin D levels in our body is maintained by Dietary intake as well as sun exposure
Causes of Vitamin D deficiency:
1. Inadequate sunlight exposure
Limited outdoor activity
Excessive use of sunscreen
2. Poor dietary intake
Low intake of vitamin D–rich foods (fatty fish, egg yolk, fortified milk/cereals)
Exclusive breastfeeding without vitamin D supplementation (important in infants)
Strict vegetarian or vegan diet without fortified foods
3. Malabsorption syndromes
Celiac disease
Crohn’s disease
Cystic fibrosis
Chronic pancreatitis
Post-bariatric surgery
4. Liver and kidney disorders
Chronic liver disease
Chronic kidney disease
5. Increased requirements
Infancy and adolescence
Pregnancy and lactation
Rapid growth periods
6. Obesity
Reduced bioavailability
7. Drugs that increase vitamin D metabolism
Antiepileptics (phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine)
Rifampicin
Glucocorticoids
Antiretroviral drugs
8. Endocrine and genetic causes (less common)
Hypoparathyroidism
Vitamin D–dependent rickets (types I & II)
Hereditary phosphate-wasting disorders
Next Steps
1. Improve sunlight exposure (foundation step)
Arms + face exposed, no sunscreen
20–30 min, 3–4 times/week
Best time: 10 am – 3 pm
(Important but often insufficient alone in deficiency)
2. Dietary measures (adjunct, not primary treatment)
Encourage:
Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, tuna)
Egg yolk
Fortified milk, cereals
Mushrooms (UV-exposed)
Diet alone rarely corrects deficiency
Health Tips
Monitoring
Recheck 25-OH Vitamin D after 8–12 weeks
Monitor calcium, phosphate, ALP in severe cases
Avoid toxicity (>100 ng/mL)
A vitamin D level of 9.38 indicates severe deficiency, which can contribute to musculoskeletal pain and stiffness; supplementation along with cervical spine physiotherapy, posture correction, and analgesics as advised should help relieve neck pain.
You may have cervical spondylosis associated with low vitamin d level.Take d rise cap 60000 iu once a week for atleast 12 weeks. For the neck pain you can take zerodol p twice daily for a few days.Get your neck xray and if needed MRI

Your vitamin D level of 9.38 ng/mL is severely deficient (normal is 30–100 ng/mL;
Next Steps
1. Consult your treating doctor (orthopedic / spine specialist or endocrinologist) within the next 3–7 days — show this vitamin D report + mention neck pain since surgery.
• Do not start high-dose vitamin D on your own without prescription (severe deficiency needs monitored loading dose).
2. Likely treatment plan (doctor will confirm/adjust):
• Loading phase: 60,000 IU vitamin D3 once weekly for 8 weeks (common brands in India: D-Rise, Uprise-D3, Calcirol, Lumia, Arachitol Nano)
• Calcium supplement: 500–1000 mg elemental calcium daily (e.g., Shelcal HD, Calcimax, Cipcal) — must be taken with vitamin D
• Maintenance: After 8 weeks → 2,000 IU daily or 60,000 IU monthly lifelong
• Take with fatty meal (milk, curd, ghee, eggs) for better absorption
3. Recheck vitamin D after 8–12 weeks of treatment — aim for 40–60 ng/mL.
Health Tips
• Pain & stiffness relief (safe to do now):
• Warm compress / hot water bag on neck & shoulders 15 min, 2–3 times/day
• Gentle neck stretches (chin tuck, side bends, shoulder rolls) 5–10 min twice daily
• Paracetamol 650 mg as needed (max 3–4 times/day)
• Avoid pillow too high/low — use medium-firm orthopedic pillow
• Lifestyle to support recovery:
• 15–20 min safe sun exposure (arms & legs) daily between 10 am–2 pm
• Eat calcium + vitamin D rich foods: curd, paneer, ragi, sesame seeds, eggs, fatty fish (if non-veg)
• Avoid prolonged forward-head posture (phone/laptop use) — take breaks every 30 min
• Light yoga (neck/shoulder asanas like Tadasana, Bhujangasana) under guidance
• Do NOT ignore this — severe vitamin D deficiency + cervical spondylitis at your age can worsen stiffness, pain, and even lead to nerve compression if untreated.
Vitamin D correction usually brings noticeable relief in neck pain/stiffness within 4–8 weeks — many patients see 50–70% improvement.

Vitamin D deficiency has become almost an endemic disease in India.
Neck stiffness seems to be unrelated to the Gall bladder surgery.
Please get an X ray of the cervical spine done and consult a General Physician with the report.
Anaesthesia during surgery leaves some minor complications. Also low Vit D levels needs supplements. Kindly consult with me on 94 two six eight six 78 nine six.
Dear Patient,
Your Vitamin D level is 9.38 which is very low and comes under severe deficiency. Low Vitamin D can itself cause neck pain, stiffness, muscle tightness, body ache, fatigue and weakness. So your symptoms may be mainly due to deficiency along with mild cervical spondylosis.
Causes of low Vitamin D commonly include low sunlight exposure, indoor lifestyle, poor diet, recovery period after illness or surgery and reduced absorption. Gall bladder surgery does not directly cause deficiency but lifestyle changes after surgery can contribute.
What you should do
Vitamin D treatment
Take Cholecalciferol once weekly for 8 weeks then once monthly for 4 to 6 months as maintenance. Always take it after food preferably containing some fat for better absorption.
Calcium supplementation
Take Calcium daily for 2 to 3 months.
Daily sunlight exposure for 15 to 20 mint
Neck pain relief
Do hot fomentation for 15 minutes twice daily, gentle neck exercises, maintain correct posture, use a thin pillow and avoid long mobile use with neck bending.
Usually symptoms start improving within 4 to 6 weeks after correction of Vitamin D.
If you develop arm pain, numbness, tingling or weakness then further evaluation may be required.
