Hi,
Itâs understandable that your OCD symptoms are causing you significant distress, especially during pregnancy when anxiety can be heightened. Your fears about mixing household items with food and the need for constant reassurance are common OCD concerns, but they can be managed with proper support. I strongly recommend consulting a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, who can help you with therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is effective for OCD. They can also advise on safe medication options if needed, in consultation with your healthcare provider. Seeking help will enable you to manage your fears better, making your pregnancy journey more peaceful and ensuring you feel supported. Remember, you donât have to face this aloneâprofessional guidance can make a big difference.

Hi,
Seems like you are suffering with intense and persistent fear that something bad might happen if you are not too careful. This may have been picked up early on with negative experiences in life and you may have formed an association that doing these rituals might relieve the pressure and help you out of danger. While it is understandable that what you do is with the intent to protect and it may have made sense once, to fear something that much, today it is making you suffer even more.
It's important that you address it so we stop relying on this old pattern of unhelpful checking and work towards reasonable concern which won't affect your life in a negative manner.
I hear how much you are struggling right now, and I want to start by validating your experience. Managing a demanding IT career, a 5-year-old, and a pregnancy is already a significant feat. Adding the weight of escalating OCD symptoms on top of that is incredibly taxing.
What you are describing—specifically the fear of accidentally "contaminating" food with household chemicals—is a very common manifestation of OCD, often referred to as "Responsibility OCD" or "Harm OCD."
It is very common for OCD symptoms to flare up during pregnancy. This happens for two main reasons: biological changes and increased responsibilities.
The videos and photos you are taking are known as "reassurance seeking" and "checking compulsions." While they provide a few seconds of relief, they actually keep the OCD cycle alive by teaching your brain that you cannot handle the uncertainty without proof.
Next Steps
consult a mental health practitioner.
Build a "Support Buffer". You are currently trying to do everything while your "anxiety tank" is full. If possible, delegate cooking or cleaning tasks to your partner or external help for a few weeks to reduce the number of "triggers" you face daily while you begin treatment.
This is contamination focused OCD, commonly intensified during pregnancy. Reassurance behaviors like repeated checking and videos are maintaining the anxiety.
Next Steps
Consult with me for focused counselling therapy for pregnancy safe OCD management.
Health Tips
Reduce reassurance gradually and practise accepting uncertainty.
