NEW BORN CRYING HEAVILY AT NIGHT
My son is 5 days old. He is not breast feeding at all. He is crying to exhaustion at night. No soothing works. He is passing hard stools . I am so nervous thinking whether he has gas problems because of the powder food or anything else. His crying is making me cry.

This pattern of inconsolable crying is normal for a newborn and lasts for a few months. Initial few days, the secretion of breast milk tends to be less and increases gradually. You should try and keep continuing to breastfeed. The milk secretion will increase. A gentle massage on the tummy can be done incase of hard stools. This should also settle with time. Please do not worry as this is a normal phenomenon in newborns.
Next Steps
After feeding, please burp the baby gently for about 10 minutes.
Health Tips
Make sure the thyroid profile of the baby is within normal limits.

The inconsolable crying episodes one possible reason could be due to cramps in the gut and the other is inadequate feeding. For gut cramps give colicaid drops (40mg/1ml) 5 drops every 8 hourly. If hard stools are being passed then please increase the feeding volume.
