A 'pinched nerve' is the name given to the uncomfortable sensation, pain, or numbness caused when increased pressure leads to irritation or damage to a peripheral nerve. Although this condition is often associated with back pain or a neck injury, almost any nerve is susceptible. Anything which increases pressure around a nerve can cause a pinched nerve. Common causes include body position such as leaning on elbows, habitually crossing legs, poor posture, disc herniation, weight gain, pregnancy and repetitive activities. You may have to undergo investigations such as Electromyography(EMG) and CT/MRI. I would advise you to meet a neurologist so as to get properly assessed and treated accordingly. These following steps may be of help to you:
- Rest plenty and especially rest the areas which hurt you.
- Physiotherapy has shown to be effective in treatment.
- Exercise regularly as it may strengthen the back or core muscles and decrease or eliminate pressure on a nerve root
- Reduce your weight to a healthy weight as per your BMI
- Wearing a neck brace may be of help
- Have a well balanced diet and don't crash diet
Kindly meet a neurologist at the earliest.
