The definitive solution for Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip is Total Hip Replacement (THR).
However, the important question is when to opt for surgery, since the prosthesis has a limited lifespan due to wear and tear. This lifespan depends on the material used, the patient’s lifestyle, and their level of physical activity. Eventually, revision surgery may be required.
So, when should surgery be considered?
Surgery is usually recommended when symptoms such as pain, limp, and restricted hip movements become severe enough to interfere with daily activities and/or professional work.
Lifestyle modifications that help both before and after surgery include:
Avoid sitting cross-legged
Avoid squatting
Reduce body weight (if overweight)
Avoid high-impact activities such as jumping and running
