Most men assume and attribute emotional disturbances of a lady to their menstrual cycles. In my opinion, it has a lot to do with misogynistic propaganda and an unfortunate fashion lately.
If you think she is distressed during these periods the best thing you could do for her is be understanding and comfort her, after all she is someone you love and someone whom you identify to be in pain, regardless of the cause.
My sincere suggestion is try not engage in a verbal war over what is right or wrong but to have an open communication with your partner. Sit down, talk, find out exactly what's bothering her. Comfort her when she needs it, be supportive.
That's all that's required.

Premenstrual dysphoric syndrome can cause changes in mood , irritability... usually they start a week before menstrual period and settle with periods starting or continue till it lasts and settle down.
But if symptoms persisting for most of days in a month..we need know more details and any other symptomatology...to rule out if any underlying depression or is it part of personality.

Due to constant stress your body and mind is not able to function the way it normally does. When this problem increases it can lead to the state of depression. It happens due to decrease in certain neuro-transmitter chemicals released in your brain like - Serotonin, Nor-epinephrine and Dopamine. Different brain and body functions controlled by these neuro-transmitters are affected that result in many behavioral and physical symptoms.
If it is not timely treated it can cause memory problems and suicidal ideation in future. It also changes your behavior, memory, attention and energy levels. It can alter your personality/ temperament and can cause social difficulties in your relationships, job difficulties at your work.
There are many effects of Stress and Depression on your physical health also like your immune system, gastrointestinal system and sexual function are all adversely affected due to depression.
