Mental Health
I am a 26 year-old male. For the past 4–5 years, I have been experiencing a persistent lack of motivation and interest in almost everything. I often feel that I don’t have the energy or desire to study, work, or practice skills, even though I want to build a career. I constantly worry about my future and career, feel confused about what to do, and find it very difficult to stay consistent with any goal. These problems have been affecting my daily life and productivity for several years. I have also experienced thoughts that life has no meaning and occasional thoughts of harming myself, although I am seeking help and want to get better. Could this be due to depression, anxiety, burnout, ADHD, or another mental health condition? What type of specialist should I consult, and what evaluation or treatment would you recommend?

Hi, Thank you for sharing your concerns. It sounds like you have been struggling with low motivation, lack of interest, difficulty concentrating, worries about your future, and emotional distress for several years. Carrying this burden for such a long time can feel exhausting and overwhelming. The symptoms you described may be associated with conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, or other mental health concerns. However, a proper assessment is needed before reaching any diagnosis. Since you have also experienced thoughts of harming yourself, I would strongly encourage you to consult a psychiatrist and a counselling psychologist at the earliest. A psychiatrist can help with assessment and treatment planning, while therapy such as CBT can help you manage negative thoughts, improve motivation, and develop coping strategies. In the meantime, try not to isolate yourself. Stay connected with trusted family members or friends, maintain a basic daily routine, focus on regular meals and sleep, and take one step at a time rather than pressuring yourself to solve everything at once. Take care, and please seek professional support soon. Dr Namita Ranjan (PhD) Counselling Psychologist

This could be related to depression, anxiety or burnout, especially since it has been affecting your motivation and daily life for a long time. A mental health assessment with a psychologist or psychiatrist would be a good next step
