It could be because of an enlarged styloid process or a problem with the temporomandibular joint. When is the pain increased? Is it present at rest or during eating or chewing? Need more information before coming to a conclusion.

What was the xray suggestive of? Any bony overgrowth causing nerve compression? Styloid bone can cause pain , due to muscles attached to it.
