Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 4.11 years old and weighs 18 kg. She got vomiting and loose motion on 23 jan and completed enterogermima and zinc medicine dose. it's the 4th day she hasn't stool. She is on rice porridge, rice + thin dal and khichdi. She had 1 boiled apple and 1/2 bowl boiled papaya.
Do we need to give anything to her so she can pass a normal stool.
Do we need to continue this diet and for how long?
Can we give wheat daliya or chapati?
When can she have a proper normal diet?

Hi, it is quite common for children to not pass stool for a few days (3–5 days) following an episode of diarrhea and vomiting. This happens because the intestines have been cleared out and the child has likely been on a low-fiber, restrictive diet.
1. Do we need to give anything to her so she can pass a normal stool?
At this stage, she likely does not need a laxative. Focus on hydration and gradually increasing fiber. Ensure she is drinking plenty of water and oral rehydration fluids if she is still weak.
2. Do we need to continue this diet and for how long?
You can now start transitioning away from the strict "BRAT" (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) style diet. If she is no longer vomiting and the loose motions have stopped, you can move toward a more varied diet over the next 24–48 hours.
3. Can we give wheat daliya or chapati?
Yes, you can introduce wheat daliya now as it is easy to digest and provides good fiber. For chapati, start with a small amount of soft chapati (perhaps soaked in dal) to see how her stomach handles it before moving to a full meal.
4. When can she have a proper normal diet?
If she tolerates the daliya and soft chapati well today, she can return to her full normal family diet by tomorrow. Avoid very oily, spicy, or high-sugar foods for another 2-3 days to let the gut lining fully recover.
Next Steps
Monitor for Warning Signs: If she develops a bloated stomach, persistent abdominal pain, fresh vomiting, or if she doesn't pass stool even after 5-6 days, please consult me again.
• Activity: Encourage light physical activity to help stimulate bowel movements.
Health Tips
Avoid giving any over-the-counter stimulant laxatives without a physical examination, as the "constipation" is likely just a temporary lack of bulk in the gut.
