My husband has herniation on the right L5S1. He is a fitness model by profession. This injury is impacting his routine and profession as well. He is undergoing a lot of pain even though he is on medicines (prescribed by a spine specialist). Doctor has suggested not to get a physiotherapy. Please suggest.

Dear Practo user ,
I believe your husband is having disc herniation of L5-S1 intervertebral disc . As with any condition proper diagnosis of exact problem has to be established, which if already done as disc prolapse then you need to get MRI of Lumbar Spine assessed along with examination.
Treatment of Slip disc depends on grade of herniation and compression of neural ( nerve) structure . If it is very small like small bulge then some medication may help , but if it is protrusion , extrusion or any stenosis ( narrowing) of nerve pathway then some intervention may be required best suited for his condition . It’s Important to understand that no medicine can put disc back but only give temporary pain relief , hence it is imperative to grade the herniation and treat disc so that future aggravation doesn’t occur and he can enjoy his work and life .
Next Steps
Get MRI done and consult a good spine pin specialist
Health Tips
Avoid forward bending , squatting , heavy weight lifting till exact picture is understood .
