Probably your knee cap is locked laterally due to persistent getting up from lower heights or stairs or following sudden turning on walking or standing. This is patellofemoral pain since a year and your problem has exaggerated due to irritating the joint.

It seems ur are suffering from patellar femoral compression syndrome , which leads to cartilage loss, let me know whether u are getting more pain while climbing stairs or while getting from squatting postion.
You seem to be having chondrimalacia of the patella ( softening of the cartilage under the knee cap)
This happens with people who sit for long/ sit in cross legged position/ squat a lot/ have thyroid disorders/ vitamin D deficiency or have disturbed biomechanics of the knee or are over weight!
