Hello Doctor,
I recently started meditation and want to track its benefits scientifically. I want to check whether I am doing meditation correctly or not.
Since meditation may increase gamma brain waves, I am considering an EEG test at a Government Hospital.
My questions:
Can a normal EEG measure gamma waves?
Can EEG show if my meditation practice is actually working, or if what I feel is only placebo?
Will a Government Hospital psychiatrist recommend EEG for this purpose?
I am Already going to Government hospital from last 6 months for adhd
If the Government hospital's Doctor, refuses What can be the price in private? For EEG to measure gamma Brain waves for meditation
Thank you.

• Can a normal EEG measure gamma waves?
Technically yes, but routine clinical EEGs are not reliable for accurately measuring meditation-related gamma activity. Gamma is easily contaminated by muscle movement and noise.
• Can EEG show if meditation is “working” vs placebo?
No. EEG cannot tell whether meditation is effective or placebo. Benefits are judged by symptoms, attention, emotional regulation, sleep, and functioning, not EEG patterns.
• Will a Government Hospital psychiatrist recommend EEG for this?
Very unlikely. EEG is prescribed for seizures, altered consciousness, or brain pathology — not for monitoring meditation.
• If done privately, cost in India?
Routine EEG: ₹1,500–₹4,000.
Advanced research-grade EEG / qEEG (needed for gamma): ₹10,000–₹25,000+, usually not clinically useful.
EEG is not a valid or practical tool to assess meditation quality. Track progress using attention span, emotional stability, ADHD symptoms, stress levels, and daily functioning instead.
