Is it a good idea?seeking experts advise
I am a 29-year-old male. Since childhood, I have had severe focus problems and I cannot sit still (I keep walking/pacing). About 4 years ago, a psychiatrist diagnosed me with ADHD. ADHD medicines did not work well for me. I have been trying meditation for the last 6 months, but I still cannot focus on my breath for more than 1–2 seconds. There is no improvement. I am planning to take L-theanine (200–400 mg) about 1 hour before meditation, only for initial days, to help me focus, and then stop. Is this a good idea? What is the recommended starting dose? Any better or safer alternative you suggest? Looking for expert medical advice. Thank you.

Hi, Your difficulties with focus, restlessness, and pacing since childhood are very consistent with ADHD, and it is important to understand that traditional breath-focused meditation is often very difficult for people with ADHD, especially without symptom control. Not being able to focus on the breath does not mean you are doing meditation “wrong”- it means the technique may not suit your neurobiology at this stage. Regarding L-theanine: it is generally safe and non-addictive, and some people report mild calming or improved attention. However, evidence for meaningful benefit in moderate- severe ADHD is limited, and it should be viewed as a supportive aid, not a treatment. Your idea of using it briefly to reduce mental noise while building a meditation habit is reasonable, as long as expectations are realistic.
Next Steps
• If you try L-theanine: Start low: 100–200 mg, once daily Take it 30–60 minutes before meditation Avoid jumping directly to 400 mg Stop if you feel excessive sleepiness, headache, or dizziness • Do not rely on supplements alone for ADHD symptoms • Re-consult a psychiatrist to review: Which ADHD medicines were tried, at what dose, and for how long Non-stimulant options if stimulants did not suit you • Consider ADHD-specific approaches instead of breath meditation: Movement-based mindfulness (walking meditation, yoga, tai-chi) Short, guided meditations (1–3 minutes) Focus on external anchors (sound, body movement) rather than breath
