He appears to be suffering from hypochondriasis but that is to be diagnosed after thorough orthopaedic consultation which should negate such a claim. It can also be a part of depression or psychosis or can be other form of somatoform disorder. You should take him to a psychiatrist who can guide you in the best way possible. He might need counselling and psychotherapy sessions along with meds directed to his possible mood or psychotic symptoms (whichever is present)....
Hello,
It is very heartening to know about your concern for your brother's health condition. You have correctly judged that his anxiety and fear regarding his spine is unfounded and seemingly unreasonable, and the same has been confirmed by an orthopedic surgeon. Hence the next logical step is to meet a psychiatrist near you for his assessment. Such symptoms may be part of hypochondriasis, depression, psychosis or somatoform disorders. A comprehensive assessment is required to exactly understand the disorder and the thought pattern of your brother. Only after a detailed assessment any further comments can be made... Hope this helps you and your brother. Best wishes for your health and future..
