I am not able to focus on my studies.
Hello Doctor, I am an 2nd Year engineering student. Recently in May month , I was having panic attacks, and depression due to a breakup I had. I consulted a psychologist in Apollo Bhubaneswar. Now by God's grace I am better than before. But at that time to distract myself I started Bing watching Netflix and other OTTs . Now I want to go back to study but I am not able to focus properly, not even for just 30 min. I am just not able to sit and study for 30min at a stretch. And I am starting to watch some movies or something. I am not able to self control myself. Also to get rid of it recently I removed all OTT platform from my devices, but now I am struck with YouTube and I can't remove it also. I tried to put timer on my phone so that it should shut down the apps when I reach the time limit, but when I am watching I am just not able to control myself, and I am simply I increasing the time. I really want to get rid of it. Please help me with it.

It seems you are addicted to these. It's easier to get into addiction and difficult to get out. The good thing is your awareness and that you have already tried certain methods. However, it would need more structured goals and deliberate planning to see results in terms of de-addiction. I would advise you to book sessions with a clinical psychologist for the same for a personalized treatment. I can work with you to enquire about your problem in detail and incorporate helpful techniques.

Usually when we experience disturbing thoughts, we may tend to fight, resist or control them. Again, fighting a thought is like fighting a shadow. You can see it, but it's not real. Having said that, fighting a thought or emotion only gives it more power. Say, for instance, when someone asks you not to think of a pink elephant, the first thought that invariably comes to you is that of a pink elephant. Instead, what we can do is, learning to be an observer of such thoughts and emotions( that do not serve your highest good ) and not identify with them or act on them. Right now, your attention span might be, say, 2-3 minutes. Work with it without being hard on yourself to extend it. ' It is only when you release yourself from the prison of your own expectations, will you experience true security '. As you take baby steps in letting go of the need to control this urge to watch YouTube videos, the need to extend the time spent on studies or other pursuits, you'll see that you are able to slowly progress toward accomplishing these goals.
