With HbD-Punjab trait and beta thalassemia minor, there's a genetic risk for the baby: 1. If both parents carry hemoglobinopathy traits, there's a 25% chance of severe disease (HbD-beta thalassemia or homozygous conditions) 2. Your wife's beta thalassemia minor is significant - need partner's complete hemoglobin electrophoresis 3. Risk depends on father's genetic status Recommendations: 1. Get genetic counseling urgently 2. Partner's complete hemoglobin profile and genetic testing 3. Prenatal testing (chorionic villus sampling/amniocentesis) available if high risk 4. HbD-beta thalassemia can range from mild to severe Don't panic - most combinations result in carriers only. But proper genetic counseling and testing are essential before/during pregnancy.

So the child born to you with HbD Punjab trait and a mother with beta thalassemia minor will not inherit thalassemia major or sickle cell disease; however, there is a possibility that the baby could inherit both traits and become a compound heterozygote (HbD Punjab and beta thalassemia carrier). It usually won't cause life-threatening disease, but the child may have mild anemia or require further evaluation in advance. Since you have the HbD Punjab gene (not beta thalassemia), the child cannot have thalassemia major.
