Head Circumference of baby
Our baby was born prematurely (34 weeks pregnancy) on 31 March 2023. At birth, his weight was 1.8 kg and Head Circumference was 31.5 cm! Today we visited Doctor and found his HC as 38 cm, Height 55 cm and weight 4.2 kg. He is 2 months and 15 days old as on date. Is Head Circumference normal? As per our doctor HC is increasing abnormally and she advised for Brain USG which is also normal but doctor says to do CT Scan after 15 days! We are very concerned about this test for baby. Please let us know about HC as this age.

The head circumference normally increases by 2 cm per month for the first 3 months and then 1 cm per month for the next 3 months. I will err on the side of serial monitoring of the head circumference if Cranial USG is done by a well experienced sonologist and follow up is ensured. Another important question is the reliability of the birth record? How sure are we that the head circumference taken at birth was done by someone who is well trained in doing it, and what was his or her state of mind and presence of mind while making this measurement. Erroneous readings upto 1 cm are fairly common.
Next Steps
You should discuss this with your Pediatrician, giving him full reassurance that you are quite satisfied with the treatment he has been providing.
Health Tips
Sometimes anxiety leads to more anxiety especially as new parents, information helps in calming down. Good counselling helps in settling things completely.
