Hair loss itchy scalp
I'm losing my hair. My scalp feels dry and is always flaky . its itchy and I have grown my hair long which I tie in a pony. Is my dht too high? I have been losing hair around my crown for the last 5 years and it has been getting worse ,I do smoke and drink. My father is bald but nobody from my  Mothers side nobody is bald. Do I need to check my thyroid? Can I grow my hair back which I have lost around my crown? With medication like minoxidil or prp? I feel I have been ignorant and I'm willing to stop smoking and drinking if that's the cause . I have looked around on the internet and I generally have dry skin but the scalp is just so flaky and itchy looks oily is this a medical condition and can it be reversed ? as the forehead becomes shiny and when rubbing with a tissue a oil trail is absorbed. Please suggest steps I need to take.

Hi ! Thanks for your query. Dandruff is a common occurence. It has a tendency to recur. You have to take continuous efforts to keep it at bay. 1. Shampoo hair as frequently as required. Keep the hair clean. 2. Avoid hair styling products till dandruff goes off. 3. Use anti dandruff shampoo which contains ketoconazole once or twice a week. 4.Oil clean washed hair. 5. Do not try to scrape or comb away the flakes. Be gentle with your hair and scalp. 6. Wash your combs and brushes regularly. Do not share them.  Following healthfeed should be helpful"Understanding Dandruff" by Dr. Jolly Shah Kapadia - https://www.practo.com/healthfeed/understanding-dandruff-8830/post
Next Steps
Hair in young men is usually attributed to hormones and genetics. Since we are unable to change your genetics, we can take steps to protect the hair you have and fight the effect of hormones and genetics. Options include using vitamins to balance your diet, such as a Hair/Nail/Skin vitamin. Topical medications such as minoxodil to increase blood flow to the hair follicle. Oral medication such as finastride to block the effects of hormones on the hair follicle. You can consult on private chat with clinical photographs for personalised treatment
