My mother aged 62+ has been experiencing a grinding sensation in both her knee since the last 4 to 5 days. It's not painful but I'm concerned. She is a little over weight (BMI 32.7).
Please advice what steps should be taken at the earliest.

She would be suffering from osteoarthritis knee. It is an old age disease
If the pain is being controlled by medication then it’s fine or it will eventually require knee replacement surgery.
