Duration of muscle spasm recovery and ne
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing recurring neck pain, muscle spasm, and stiffness for the last 4 years. Both my MRI and X-ray reports are normal. Usually, I take a muscle relaxant (MR) tablet on an SOS basis about once or twice a month, which gives relief. However, this month the pain has increased, mostly due to winter, and I have needed to take MR tablets more frequently than usual. Because of this, I consulted a doctor who prescribed MR twice daily for 10 days along with gel application at night and advised using a heat pack before applying the gel. I would like to know how long muscle spasm and stiffness usually take to heal completely, whether I should complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier, and how to prevent recurrence in the future. I am a software engineer with average sitting time of 6 hours. What can be done to completely cure this issue. . Thank you.

Chronic neck muscle spasm with normal X-ray and MRI is very common in people with long sitting hours and poor posture, and it tends to recur if the root cause isn’t addressed acute muscle spasm usually settles in 7–14 days, so you should complete the prescribed 10-day course even if pain improves earlier, to allow proper muscle relaxation frequent recurrence means the issue is functional not structural related to posture, muscle imbalance, stress, and screen ergonomics rather than a serious spine problem to prevent recurrence, focus on daily neck–shoulder stretching, posture correction, regular breaks every 30–45 minutes, ergonomic chair/screen height, and strengthening exercises there is no instant permanent cure but with consistent lifestyle correction and exercises episodes become rare, mild or completely controlled over time.
