No. They don't. Research shows that a single episode of depression needs to be treated for atleast 6-9 mo. If not ,then the chances of relapse increase.
If however there are relapses then the medicine is continued for longer periods. If the depression is worsening despite taking medicines it means that either we need to increase the dose of medicine or change the medicine .

Long term use of antidepressant did not worsen the symptoms of depression.In fact they help to keep these symptoms under check. People who are prescribed antidepressant for long term usually have chronic depression or severe depression and the nature of their illness is such that they experience depressive symptoms for long term.. So it's not the medicine by it the illness that causes these symptoms.
