Dark stool after taking antibiotics
I am taking cefakind cv 500 and rabzix L. I have been seeing green/dark stools since taking these. There is no pain in the stomach. It has been happening for three days. Is this black stool??? Is this normal??

Cefakind being an antibiotic leading to softening of stool and then frank diarrhoea is most likely cause. Other two drugs should not be the cause. I always prefer Probiotics use like Vizylac, Derolac or Econorm (costly) along with antibiotics. Also antibiotics should be used only when absolutely necessary otherwise resistance is rising and these may not act in future. It is not malena (blood from upper intestine in stool, black, smelling, sticky stools).

Green or dark stools can occur due to antibiotics and are NOT black stools (melena) if there is no abdominal pain, vomiting, or weakness. True black stool is jet black, sticky, foul-smelling. Cap Vizylac Rich once daily × 5 days Continue current medicines as prescribed Warning signs: Black tarry stools, dizziness, vomiting blood then urgent consultation

It is ‘dark olive green colour’ due to the antibiotic (Cefakind) you are taking. You probably didn’t realise that the other medication you are taking has an antipsychotic in it called Levosulpride along with stomach acid reducing medication called Rabeprazole. Cefakind and Rabeprazole taken together are known to trigger an unusual bowel infection called ‘Clostridium difficile’. The advise is 1. Stop Rabzix L 2. Find out from the whoever gave you the antibiotic, if you can stop it 3. Ghar kaa dahi is good and will help the motions settle. All the best. J G S R clinic

There maybe some dietary changes along with the tablets. Better to consult/get a stool routine at your nearest lab. Usually green stools are not very concerning.
