Depression and similar conditions are extremely common and certainly treatable. However, it is important to understand that the reasons why depression manifests in an individual would be different to why it manifests in another individual. There could be genetic factors, environmental factors, upbringing issues, personality issues, stress levels, physical health, substance misuse, support network etc. Hence, standard medicine and counselling would not completely resolve depression in an individual.
Next Steps
Yes. Medicines and counselling are important and it is important that medicine is reviewed regularly for its effectiveness, tolerability, correct dosing, side effects and interaction with other medicine. Counseling like cognitive behavior therapy has to adapted to individual cognitive and personality style. Also, resolving several other contributing factors like social issues, relationships, career / finances, physical health, substance use etc becomes crucial too.
Health Tips
Two important things. One, I don't want you to lose hope as depression is treatable in most people with correct approach, although can be bit challenging if chronic. Second, the approach in chronic symptoms should be treatability and not curability. Many a times rather than getting rid of symptoms, ability to master the techniques and skills to manage them in a way, that it hardly impacts your life, would be immensely relieving and help the person to lead a normal life. Best wishes
