Cough and cold in postpartum
I am a breast feeding mother of my 3months old baby, though she is in combination feed. I am having a bad cough and cold, headache and runny nose. Please suggest what medicines can I take that won't affect my baby in any way.

ChatGPT said: Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician. Your case has been allotted to me. I understand your concern having a cough, cold, headache, and runny nose while breastfeeding is common, and it is important to choose medicines that are safe for both you and your baby. ✅ Advices • Drink plenty of warm fluids such as water, soups, and herbal teas to stay hydrated and loosen mucus • Rest as much as possible and maintain good nutrition to support your recovery and milk production • Use saline nasal drops or sprays to relieve nasal congestion safely • Steam inhalation can help reduce nasal blockage and soothe the throat What to Monitor • Note the pattern of your fever, cough, and runny nose • Watch for difficulty in breathing, high fever, or worsening headache • Observe if your milk supply changes or if your baby shows any unusual symptoms Management You may take paracetamol for fever and headache as it is safe during breastfeeding. Mild cough syrups that contain only simple expectorants or dextromethorphan can be used if needed. Avoid medicines with codeine, aspirin, or strong decongestants without doctor guidance. Symptomatic relief and supportive care are usually sufficient for viral infections. When to Consult a Doctor Immediately • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath • High or persistent fever for more than three to four days • Severe headache, facial pain, or worsening cough with green or yellow mucus Every patient situation is unique. For accurate diagnosis and safe medicine selection while breastfeeding, it is important to discuss your symptoms and medical history in detail. You can reach out to me directly for this case and also connect with me in future for any medical consultation. I am available on Practo or on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven for a one-on-one consultation where you will receive: A personalized treatment plan Safe medicine adjustments if required Quick follow-ups to track your recovery Take care wishing you and your baby good health Best regards Dr. Romain Rajan General Physician
