Herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two main types of herpes viruses:
1. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1): This type commonly causes oral herpes, which results in cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth. It can also cause genital herpes when transmitted through oral-genital contact.
2. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2): This type is primarily responsible for genital herpes, a sexually transmitted infection that leads to sores or blisters in the genital and anal areas.
Both types of herpes are highly contagious, and the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the sores, mucous membranes, or even asymptomatic shedding of the virus. While there is no cure for herpes, antiviral medications can help manage and reduce symptoms during outbreaks. Safe sexual practices, such as using condoms, can also reduce the risk of transmission.
It's important to seek medical advice and get tested if you suspect a herpes infection or have questions about its management.
