Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1), and while it is very common, it is natural to worry about how it affects a young child. If a baby is infected with HSV-1, symptoms typically appear 2 to 12 days after exposure. In infants, the primary infection can look different than it does in adults. Keep an eye out for: Gingivostomatitis:  This is the most common form in children. It involves swollen, red gums and small blisters/sores inside the mouth and on the lips. Irritability and Fever:  The baby may become fussy or refuse to eat or drink because their mouth is sore. Swollen Lymph Nodes:  You might feel small lumps under the jaw or in the neck.
