Please don’t panic — in most cases, nothing serious happens, especially in older infants like your 11-month-old baby. Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus (HSV-1). While severe infections can happen in newborns (below 1 month), in babies of this age it is usually mild or even asymptomatic. Incubation period (when symptoms appear): If infection occurs, symptoms usually show within 2–7 days after contact. What to watch for in your baby: Fever Poor feeding Excessive irritability Blisters/sores around lips, mouth, or skin Unusual sleepiness If none of these appear within a week, your baby is very unlikely to be affected. Important reassurance: Serious complications like meningitis are very rare in 11-month-old healthy babies Most exposures do not lead to infection You have already taken the right step by wearing a mask and avoiding further contact
Next Steps
What you should do now: Avoid kissing baby until your sore completely heals Wash hands frequently Continue normal feeding and care
Health Tips
When to see a doctor urgently: Fever + poor feeding Blisters on skin or mouth Lethargy or unusual behavior
