Even if the cat bite or scratch appears minor, it is important to take it seriously. Cat bites and scratches can transmit infections including rabies and tetanus, even if there is no bleeding or swelling. Please do the following: 1. Immediately wash the area thoroughly with plenty of soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, then apply an antiseptic such as povidone-iodine or chlorhexidine solution. 2. Do not take any oral antiseptic tablets — these do not prevent infection. 3. Consult a doctor as soon as possible to assess whether you need: • Anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) — usually recommended for all cat bites/scratches unless the cat is fully vaccinated and under observation. • Tetanus booster, if you haven’t had one in the last 5 years. • Antibiotics if there’s a risk of infection (for example, amoxicillin-clavulanate). Avoid delaying vaccination — injections are the only proven preventive measure for rabies.
