Hi, sudden BP spike to 220/120 is triggered by stress, anxiety, salt intake, or pain. Continue regular medicines, monitor BP twice daily at home, low salt diet, and avoid stress. If it spikes again with severe headache, go to emergency immediately. Feel free to consult for further guidance.👍

A BP of 220/120 in a 57-year-old is a hypertensive crisis and you were right to take her to emergency immediately. The good news is all investigations came back normal, which means there is no organ damage so far. The most common reason for such sudden spikes — when thyroid, kidneys, heart, and brain all check out normal — is uncontrolled or undertreated essential hypertension, which can be triggered by stress, high salt intake, missed medication, or even pain.
Next Steps
Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation — I can review her current medications and help you understand the right long-term plan to prevent future spikes.

your mother-in-law's blood pressure reading of 220/120 mmHg accompanied by a headache constitutes a medical emergency known as a Hypertensive Crisis. Seeking emergency hospital admission was absolutely the correct and life-saving decision, as blood pressure spikes of this magnitude carry a high clinical risk of acute organ damage if left untreated.
Next Steps
Ensure she takes her newly prescribed blood pressure medications exactly as directed by the hospital team without skipping a single dose. Stopping blood pressure medicine abruptly can trigger a severe "rebound" hypertensive spike.
Health Tips
To thoroughly review her specific emergency discharge medication summary, analyze her daily home blood pressure tracking trends, and provide a guided prevention plan against future spikes, please book a full consultation session via my Practo profile."

Hi! The root cause of hypertension in adult or elderly population is essential hypertension, which is related to the aging process as regulatory mechanisms become weak. If all the tests are normal, all you need to do is take the medications on time and not skipping any dose even if your bp reading become normal.
Next Steps
Add dietary and lifestyle habits to augment your treatment. Consult a doctor for any doubts because there are a lot of misconceptions on the internet.
Health Tips
Most common cause of such another episode would be missing a dose. Check BP regularly and take medications regularly.
