Every winter my big toenails turn yellow and then seem to die, and new normal nails very slowly emerge from below them, on both feet. I saw a podiatrist the first winter this happened and he took a sample and said it was not fungus and he suspected that the nails got damaged somehow or that it was from wearing tight shoes. This has gone on several years now and my shoes don’t feel tight and there hasn’t been any physical damage to my knowledge. I don’t know what this is.
