Metformin 500 mg is known to cause bloated abdomen , diarrhea, gastritis rarely in the initial stages of treatment, the body usually gets used to metformin in couple of weeks time. If you still have issues with it after a few weeks ,you can opt for newer drugs like SGLT2 inhibitors like canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin. They are given alone or in combination with metformin

Metformin is basic and very 1st drug to be used. Use cap Omeprazole 20 mg or pantoprazole 40 mg 30 min before meals in morning to avoid gastritis

Hii.. metformin 500 is a very good medication and therefore it is always given first. Even if she doesn’t tolerate it after pantop tablet ,than we should change to other drug.

Metformin is a very good drug, hence recommended as the 1st choice.it is common to  have gastric issues with it.pantoperazole 40mg can be taken 20 mibutes before metformin,to avoid gastric issues. If,in a few days, the symptoms do not get better ,a different medication can be tried. Meanwhile please encourage her to modify her lifestyle as if tried early, and done properly,it can work even better than drugs,in some cases even reversing diabetes.

Hi., I can understand your concern. Metformin is the first line medicine for sugar. Your mother can take metformin with that, she can take pan 40 as gastro protective before food twice a day. If still, she's facing gastric problem, we can change the med based on sugar levels.
